Return to classes if Government dates do not change for spirit combat and kickboxing

Following the Government guidance on the road map of leaving lock downs the guidance is as follows returning to classes and hopefully contact classes again.

29th March we could start outdoor classes, must be socially distanced.

12th April- indoor children’s classes can return (also child and parent classes up to 15 adults). Must be socially distanced, no partner or pad work.

17th May- adults can return to indoor classes, must be socially distanced, no partner or pad work.

21st June- return to contact classes is thought at the moment.

This is guidance from numerous martial arts governing bodies and their safeguarding leads.

So, my thoughts are as following

Spirit Combat returns from April outside at the cricket fields in Bere Alston until the week of the 12th when the Children can return indoors and then adults will carry on outside until week of the 17th May.

Kickboxing we will train outside in Tavistock venue (thinking up by the pimple) to be confirmed until 17th may then we should be returning to Tavistock College indoors. Once I know what my fa tutoring future is on the 30th April, we may end up moving kickboxing to a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday or add another night.

My plan for both clubs is to have seminars/master classes running at weekends from July for anyone that’s interested in topics such as;

  • Ring craft
  • Throws and take downs, with counters
  • Locks, with counters
  • Blocking,
  • Edged weapons
  • Close quarter combat
  • Modern Aikido levels 1 and 2
  • Injury prevention in martial arts
  • Kobotans
  • Weapons (bo, sai, escrema, nunchu, broken)
  • Self-defence (qualifications also available)

Some sessions will be age related

So, thoughts on outdoor classes until indoor ones can be started would be appreciated. Feel free to message me on 07773863518 or email sculpting_fitness@hotmail.com

Class changes

There will be a change to the Kickboxing classes on Friday nights from 6th September form 7.35-9pm to the new time of 7-8pm. Higher belts will have the option to stay on for an extra half hour session.

Were hoping this change will be better for younger students and for families wishing and wanting to train together. Also for those wanting to go out after classes on a Friday night. Look forward to seeing everyone at the new time of 7pm starting this Friday.

Congratulations to Nathan Pollard winning our Kickboxing Student of the Month for February 2018. Nathan a former British Kickboxing Union U16 title holder. Classes update

An update on classes, Thursday 1st March their will be no Martial Arts classes in Bere Alston at the Parish hall due to the hall being pre-booked. Friday 2nd March there will be no Kickboxing Classes at Tavistock Community College due to the fight day in Guilford, But due to the weather the College maybe closed and we may not be able to travel to Guilford.

There is no Tuesday Spirit Combat classes on a Tuesday at Bere Alston Primary School. This is due to Steve’s FA tutoring commitments but also Sensei Charlie’s college and work commitments means he can’t help cover classes in Steve’s absent.

We are working to find a new assistant instructor to help assist with Tuesday night classes. We have has 2 offers and are working with them to see if they would be a good fit to help.

National Guilford Fight day

On Friday 24th November a number of the South West Kickboxing Academy (SWKA) club based in Tavistock travelled up to Guilford for a national fight day. We lost one fighter earlier in the week with Nathan having to pull out of the British Kickboxing Union (BKBU) Under18’s title.

We did have one student competing on the day with young Peter getting into the ring for the 2nd time. Peter put on a much improved performance and suffered an narrow loss in his bout.

Other SWKA students who travelled up helped out with refereeing, and Judging on the day and with Head Coach Steve Lilley passing his 5th Dan in Kickboxing.

Day time availability for 1-2-1 and small group sessions

We have some spaces during the days between mid October and December for private sessions on a 1-2-1 basis or in small groups for Martial Arts and Self-Defence Sessions. We can arrange a venue if needed in the Devon/Cornwall Area.

Sessions can include;

Self-Defence

Kickboxing

Grading’s

Modern Aikido

Spirit Combat

Fight Prep for ring bouts

If you feel that a smaller group session would be best for you then please feel free to email us on sculpting_fitness@hotmail.com or call us on 07773863518 and we will book you in for your session/s.

Update

Hi

Sorry its taken a while for a new post things have been hectic. Since the last post the following things have happened;

We visited Exeter to attend a Seminar with Bill “Superfoot” Wallace, former world kickboxing champion.

We have hosted Former UFC and Cage Warrior Champion Rosi “the Surgeon ” Sexton.

We have launched our first Spirit Combat class for Children.

One of our students Nathan Pollard became the British Kickboxing Union (BKBU) U16’s Champion

We have been delivering sessions for OCRA for Primary Schools in West Devon.

No Class this Friday the 3rd June.

Unfortunately theirs no Kickboxing this Friday night coming the 3rd June. Head Coach 4th Dan Steve Lilley is away in Manchester working. Unfortunate Steve hasn’t been able to sort insurance cover yet for the Black Belts Chris and Matt to be able to cover the class.

Therefore, for one week only their will be no class but we will be back to normal from the 10th June. Sorry about this.

Disappointment at MAAS fight day in Guilford

On Friday 4th March local members of the South West Kickboxing Academy (SWKA) Courtney and Nathan Pollard both travelled up to Guildford ahead of the fight day at the Guilford Spectrum. Head coach 4th Dan Steve Lilley travelled up in the morning leaving at 5am to join them at the Spectrum.

It was a long day and Courtney made her debut in the fighting ring, and grew praise from instructors from other clubs for getting in the ring have having ago against an more experienced opponent. Young Courtney who’s 7 looked nervous in her first round, but grew in confidence as she went into the 2nd and 3rd rounds having got used to what was going on and the nerves settling down. Both Steve and Dad Jamie who helped corner Courtney’s fight were very proud of her performance in the ring and the experience she got, even though she didn’t win her bout.

Later in the day it was Nathan’s time to get into the ring as he went toe-to-toe with Ryan Gunnell from the Team Gatwick club in London for the British kickboxing Union (BKBU) U16’s title. Nathan was given 3 weeks’ notice at the chance of this title fight. This was Nathan 2nd time in the ring and Ryan’s 3rd time in the ring. It was a tough bout with both fighters showing signs of tiredness in the final round. The fight was awarded a win to Ryan Gunnell, from Team Gatwick to the surprise of the referee Rob Lloyd who thought the win should have gone to Nathan, and their seemed to be a mixed decision between those who watched the fight to who the winner was, as different people watching had different opinions on who the winner was, some going for Nathan and others for Ryan meaning there was probably a tight split decision for the judges on the show. However, the judges gave the win against Nathan who will have the chance for a rematch later this year. Nathan graciously accepted defeat even though he felt like he had done more than enough to win the fight, and took the decision like a real champion which my head coach Steve very proud. So we will be reviewing the video footage to ensure that when the rematch takes place later this year Nathan will be able to ensure he gets the right decision.

For anyone wishing to get involved or follow in Nathan and Courtney’s footsteps, then please feel free to come and join us at Tavistock College on a Friday Night 7.35-9pm in the gymnasium. You can contact Steve on 07773863518, email sculpting_fitness@hotmail.com or visit www.swkickboxingacademy.com for more details.
