About us

The South West Kickboxing Academy and Martial Arts (SWKA) was set up in March 2008, under head coach Steve Lilley 5th Dan. With the assistance of a few black belts remaining from Kicksport UK classes in Cornwall. Initially the club joined the ISKA governing body, but due to issues with club support the SWKA left and joined Martial Arts All Styles (MAAS). The Club initially ran out of Callington Sport and Leisure before leaving to move to Pensilva and starting a second night at Tavistock College Sports Centre.

During this time the club as gone through patches of growth and re-build like all Martial Arts clubs do. Head Coach 5th Dan Steve Lilley, had been driving the club forwards with help from senior students. The SWKA fight team in 2014, which was made up of 5 students 2 both made it to number one contenders for national MAAS titles in 2015. Which shows the standards of students who decide to go on and compete. Steve only lets students who are ready compete. Steve himself entered the ISKA World Championship Qualifiers in 2008, which no competition experience or corner team and finished 4th in England in both Semi Contact and light continuous competition. Steve is a national judge and Referee with in MAAS at their fight days, and also fights and judges at Satellite promotion events when required up in Guildford.

The SWKA is looking forward to expanding classes, with Spirit Combat, Modern Aikido and possibly Hojo-jutsu being added to the list of classes being run by the SWKA.

Kickboxing classes are run by 5th Dan Steve Lilley.

In July 2017 we launched our Spirit combat class. This is run by 1st Dan Steve Lilley, Brown Belt Charlie Hingston.

  • The reasons I train with swka: the people I train with are good people, there is always a laugh and a joke to be had, the people are there because they want to lean a new skill set, the instructors are top notch, and we always go away from each lesson having learnt something new
